Casting the Gospel Net over the Internet

What is EVANGELISM?

The word "evangelism" comes from a New Testament Greek word: euangelion.  This word is a compound word made up of two words: "eu", meaning "Good" and "angelion", meaning "Message or News" (angelion is the word we get angel from.  An angel is a messenger).  So, the word "evangelism" comes from a Greek word that means Good News. It is translated into English with the word "Gospel".  So, to recap, the word gospel means "Good News" and comes from the Greek word euangelion

Now we read in the Bible that Jesus preached (proclaimed to others) the gospel Matthew 4:23 and commanded his followers to preach the gospel Mark 16:15.  The apostle Paul tells us that "faith" comes from hearing it Romans 10:17 and by it's "power", people are saved Romans 1:16-17.  So evangelism is proclaiming the gospel so that people can be saved.  This is a very specific message.  If you do not preach this specific message, this gospel, you run the risk of preaching another gospel Galatians 1:6-7.

Please note at this point that evangelism is not doing good deeds, praying, conversion or discipleship.  All these things are important but evangelism is a very specific thing.  It is is proclaiming the gospel of peace that saves, and not another gospel.

So, what exactly is the gospel that was preached?

What is the specific message people need to hear so that they can be saved?

Is it, "God loves you and has a wonderful plan for your life?"  No!

Paul summarised it in 1 Corinthians 15.  (1) Now I want to make clear for you, brothers and sisters, the gospel that I preached to you, that you received and on which you stand, (2) and by which you are being saved, if you hold firmly to the message I preached to you - unless you believed in vain. (3) For I passed on to you as of first importance what I also received - that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures, 15:4 and that he was buried, and that he was raised on the third day according to the scriptures, (5) and that he appeared to Cephas...

Note that Paul says these four points are of  first importance.  So if they are not declared, you don't have the gospel and you don't have evangelism.  Neither do you have evangelism if you do not make it clear to people why Jesus died for sins.  Paul started with the most important point: Jesus death for sins.  But you cannot speak of his death for sins if you do not help the sinner to understand why he died for their sins.  And, once you have done that, how do you explain to them what they must now do to be saved.  Do they go to Church, start praying, read the Bible, do good to others, believe in Jesus???

To discover how do this, you will need to look at to things: the GOOD PERSON TEST and HELL'S BEST KEPT SECRET.  Click on the link in the menu to go to the Good Person Test.  Then go to the "Resources" page to listen to or read "Hell's Best Kept Secret".  You can also watch "Hell's Best Kept Secret" on the videos page.

Who should evangelise?

You will not find the word "evangelism" in the Bible but you will find "evangelist" 2 Timothy 4:5.  When an evangelist evangelises you have EVANGELISM!  So, does that mean that if you're not an evangelist then evangelism is not for you.  The simple answer is "No".

Telling others the Good News so others can hear and believe Romans 10:17 is the Privilege, Responsibility 1 Peter 3:15 and Joy of all Christians.   If you're not sure how to do this, don't worry, this is part of what this site is all about.

Website Evangelism is not just about using the Internet for Evangelism but it is also for equipping Christians to evangelise: to proclaim the gospel biblically, clearly Colossians 4:4, confidently, boldly and with a great love for the lost.  You will find lots of help on the "Resources" page and other pages.

There is some urugency to this because all have sinned Romans 3:23 and there is a day of judgement Hebrews 9:27 and according to Jesus, many of the 150,000 who people die every day are going to hell Matthew 7:13.  We need to give them the opportunity to repent and believe the gospel Mark 1:15.

How to avoid disappointment

The purpose of Website Evangelism is: Evangelism - proclaiming the Good News about Christ's death for sinners (Mark 16:15).  While this website shows some "results" from the approach of Website Evangelism, the focus of this mission is not on results!  That may be shocking for some to read.  But it is  entirely Scriptural.  Jesus did not say, "Get converts" but "Preach the gospel" and "Make disciples".    If Evangelism for you means, "Get converts" then not only is it unbiblical but it is destined for disappointment and frustration.  However, if you understand that Evangelism is obeying Jesus command to "Preach the gospel" you will be successful every time you do it.

Successful Evangelism

is not measured by responses to the gospel but by the spread of the gospel

Jesus said, "And this gospel of the kingdom shall be preached in all the world for a witness unto all nations; and then shall the end come" (Matthew 24:14).
